Celebrity dinner (Sat 07 May)

The Club staged their latest celebrity dinner on Friday with the manager, directors, supporters and guests thoroughly entertained by the former Charlton Athletic, Luton Town, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Portsmouth and Manchester City player, Paul Walsh.

Ex. England international, Walsh, sat at the top table alongside Reds’ boss, Darren Edmondson, excellent comedian, Nicky Newsome, compare Howard Nicholson and director, Jos Taylor.

Howard opened proceedings in his own special way before the well presented meal was served. Paul then told the attentive audience of his career which started at Charlton Athletic and has taken him to Sky Sports as a pundit. Nicky, competing with a spectacular thunder and lightning storm outside, told some very funny stories and his brand of comedy went down a treat.

A good evening was enjoyed by all.

Unsung heroes awarded (Sun 01 May)

Aaran Taylor completed an unusual hat-trick in the Player of the Year awards and was joined on the rostrum by double winner Anthony Wright and Adam Main.

Ever-present Aaran capped a marvellous first season as Reds’ number one ‘keeper by being voted Most Improved Player, Players’ Player of the Year and National Supporters’ Player of the Year.

Anthony Wright’s ever-growing popularity was reflected in his two awards as he picked up the Supporters’ Player of the Year and Regular Away Supporters’ Player of the Year accolades.

Adam Main, the Under 18’s Player of the Year last season, maintained his progress by being voted Young Player of the Year.

The presentations were made in the Social Club after the Hinckley United game.

New Zealand bound (Fri 22 Apr)

Stephen Hindmarch, (pictured left), and Conor Tinnion, (pictured right), fly out to New Zealand on Monday as they prepare for the next chapter of their football education.

Both are linking up with one of the country’s oldest clubs, Western Suburbs, and are due to spend four months there.

Conor has featured in most of our games this season whilst Stephen has gained some valuable pitch time in recent weeks after a lengthy spell on the sidelines through illness.

We wish them both well during their time with the Wellington club.

McLuckie to undergo op
(Fri 01 Apr)

Reds' midfielder Phil McLuckie is to undergo emergency surgery on his depressed cheekbone this Monday morning at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.

Phil had an appointment with the surgeon yesterday for the pre-ops and discussed the options the surgeon was considering. These include pulling the cheekbone back into place and also may involve fitting of a plate.

Currently Phil is unable to chew, hence his mother Angela is looking forward to not having to puree all his food.

'B' Grade retained
(Fri 01 Apr)

FA officials visited Borough Park on Thursday afternoon to conduct the biannual ground inspection.

Thankfully, we retained our B grading – the minimum requirement for Conference North membership – on the proviso that new toilets are installed by the 1st August.

Toilet facilities was one aspect of the criteria we didn’t comply with but work has been hampered by the preparation work for the new bridge. There is some uncertainty about the Derwent End of the ground at the moment and we will lose nearly two metres of land along the approach road to the main entrance.

Squad boost (Fri 01 Apr)

Reds’ boss Darren Edmondson has boosted his wafer thin squad with a quintet of signings with the ‘new recruits’ all registered before the 5pm deadline on Thursday.

Four players from the reserve team have registered as Conference players along with Carlisle United teenager, Steven Swinglehurst, who has come on Work Experience.

Ben Jackson (23), John Bentley (23), Steven Rudd (20), Mark Sloan (18) and Steven Swinglehurst (18) will boost a squad that has lost Phil McLuckie through injury while loanee Nick Rogan is only available for the next fortnight before his return to Fleetwood Town.

Ben has been a regular member for Dave Rodgie’s second string this term and has also played in the Northern League for Penrith. Former Reserve team skipper, Steven Rudd, has been playing for Aspatria following his two seasons with Gretna and recently played for us in the Lancashire League. John Bentley, from Shap, has been playing for the reserves and has also been associated with Penrith. Recently released by Carlisle United, Maryport teenager, Mark Sloan, was originally a front man but more recently has been operating in midfield. Steven Swinglehurst is off to Wembley with Carlisle United this week-end but will link-up with us on their return.

Reds have just seven games left but hope to complete their sixth consecutive season in Conference North with a top half finish – they are currently 10th – but upcoming opponents appear to be hitting a bit of form.

Darren has only been able to name four substitutes in two of the recent games.

Reserves' game off  (Thu 31 Mar)

Workington’s Lancashire League fixture v. Curzon Ashton, scheduled to be played at Borough Park on Thursday, has been postponed due to the Manchester club’s travelling difficulties.

The Reds second string were hoping to avenge a 5-0 drubbing at Curzon Ashton last Saturday but will now have to wait until late April to play the game.

They will be at home on Monday evening when Lancaster City are the visitors (8pm) then travel to Formby for their final away fixture on Wednesday.

Droylsden game gets the go ahead  (Sat 12 Mar)

A pitch inspection planned early Saturday morning has been cancelled as the standing water that was present yesterday on Borough Park has now disappeared and the pitch is playable.

The Droylsden game, 3pm kick-off, is on.

Pitch inspection planned  (Fri 11 Mar)

A pitch inspection is planned early Saturday morning as Reds prepare to host Droylsden in Blue Square Bet North tomorrow afternoon (3pm).

With heavy rain throughout Friday and likely throughout the night the Borough Park pitch will be inspected at around 8am and the match officials and the Droylsden party will be advised on whether to travel.

Tenth placed Reds lost to Droylsden, currently eigth, 3-0 at the Butchers Arms back in October.

White joins up with Tommy (Fri 18 Feb)

Defender Alex White has joined up with former Reds’ manager Tommy Cassidy at Whitby Town for a month loan spell. White has not featured in the Reds’ squad recently and has been lacking game time recently.

Whitby Town are struggling near the bottom of the Evostick Premier league and are playing at Mickleover Sports, one place above them, this Saturday and White is set to debut in this game.

Meanwhile, on loan defender Tom Smyth is set to play his last game on Saturday before his return to Accrington Stanley on completon of his three month loan spell.

Trinty match gets the go ahead  (Mon 24 Jan)

Groundsman Jeff Curwen’s unstinting efforts on the Borough Park pitch look as though they will be rewarded as Reds prepare to host Gainsborough Trinity in Blue Square Bet North this afternoon (3pm).

Despite heavy rain through night the Borough Park pitch was near perfect at 7am and the match officials and the Gainsborough party were advised to travel.

Eleventh placed Reds and Trinity, currently seventeenth, drew 1-1 at the Northolme back in August.

Greulich joins on loan  (Mon 24 Jan)

Young striker Corey Greulich has joined Workington on a month-long loan deal.

The 19-year-old will be available for Tuesday night's home game against Eastwood Town.

Greulich, a tall and physical striker known as "Billy", joined Pools at the start of the 2009/2010 season and made his debut in the home win over Tranmere Rovers in October 2009.

Another fixture change  (Tue 18 Jan)

There has been yet another fixture change to the Reds schedule. We are now playing Gainsborough Trinity at home on Saturday 5th February with the re-arranged game brought forward from Tuesday 15th February.

No date has yet confirmed for the postponed Guisleley match.

Alan Kirkman passes away  (Mon 17 Jan)

It is with regret that we have to report the death of former Reds' player Alan Kirkman at the age of 74.

Kirkman began his professional career with Manchester City and also went on to play for Rotherham United, Newcastle United, Torquay United and Scunthorpe United.

Alan lived in his hometown of Bolton and managed non-league sides Rossendale and Leigh RMI.

Alan played and scored in the first leg of the inaugural League Cup final for Rotherham United against the ultimate winners Aston Villa.

All at Workington AFC pass on their deepest sympathies to his family.

A minutes silence will be held at tomorrow night's game against Redditch United.

Nick Rogan signs on loan  (Sat 15 Jan)

The Reds completed the loan signing of striker Nick Rogan from Blue Square Premier side Fleetwood Town on Friday.

Rogan has previously played two games on loan for the Reds in the 2004-2005 season under manager Tommy Cassidy while a player at Conference side Morecambe.

He played his first game starting against Leek Town, (away), on 12 March 2005 in a 1 - 1 draw. Matt Henney was the scorer.

His second match was as a playing substitute in the 2 - 0 win against Radcliffe Borough, (away), on 19 March. Matt Henney and Gary Cohen were the scorers.

The Blackpool born ex-Barrow striker is currently studying his second year for a Ph.D in Oceanography at the University of Liverpool.

AFC Telford United fixture loses out to the weather  (Sat 08 Jan)

The Blue Square Bet North fixture against AFC Telford United has been postponed due to a frozen and waterlogged pitch.

The Borough Park pitch was still frozen and overnight rain had left surface water on the pitch.

Local official Michael Bradley inspected the Borough Park pitch early on Saturday morning and at 7:45am made the inevitable decision witnessed by Dave Topping, AFC Telford United director and match secretary, who had travelled up on Friday and was staying locally.

Pitch inspection  (Fri 07 Jan)

There will be a pitch inspection at Borough Park on Saturday morning ahead of the scheduled Blue Square Bet North game against AFC Telford United.

The hard frost on Thursday evening left the pitch unplayable on Friday so an inspection will held at first light in the hope that the attractive fixture can go ahead.

Late postponement frustrates the Reds  (Mon 03 Jan)

The Reds were only 30 minutes travelling time away from Vauxhall Motors' Rivacre Park when they received the news that Monday's game was likely to be postponed following further problems due to burst pipes at the Rivacre Park ground.

Fifteen minutes later, following discussions with Conference League officials and the match referee, the postponement was finally confirmed at around 12:45pm.

The Reds team coach, having a short stop at the Lymm services at the time, turned around and returned to west Cumbria.
