Formby Reserves  1 - 0  Workington Reserves

Thursday 29th January 2009

It was a tale of missed opportunities for the Reds Reserves against Formby Reserves on Thursday evening as the Reds played their first match since the 20th November due to multiple cancellations due to the weather conditions over the past few months.

Playing into a bitterly cold in the first half, the elements had a big effect on the outcome of this game as in the 24th minute Formby scored the only goal of the game direct for a corner.  The ball was swung into the Reds penalty area when the wind caught hold of the ball and deceived the Reds keeper James Bryden in the flight of the ball.

Other than the goal incident the Reds Reserves coped well with the Formby threat offered.

Andy Murray-Jones had a good debut up front, holding the ball up well alongside his fellow striker Nick Holden.

The Reds had a string of missed chances with Reserves’ skipper Lee McCullough having a shot tipped over the bar, Gareth Brunton shooting wide and Dan McDermott having a header cleared off the line from a corner.

Dan McDermott and man of the match Bryan Rutherford, (pictured left), both impressed the new Reserve Team manager Steve Lee, while four players made their debuts; Andy Murray-Jones, Steve Hampton, Ian Green and Simeon Lee.

It was a promising performance from a young Reserves side with eight under 17’s in the starting eleven.

Reserves:  James Bryden, Steve Hampton (Ian Green 70), Greg Mitchell, Bryan Rutherford, Dan McDermott, Lee McCullough, Gareth Brunton, Adam Maine, Andy Murray-Jones, Nick Holden (Stefan Scott 65), Simeon Lee.
