Reds Reserves hauled themselves off the foot of the Lancashire League table after this stunning win over third placed Town just six weeks after an 8-1 thrashing at Fleetwood’s Collins Park.
Monday night’s success was somewhat unexpected but thoroughly deserved after a stoic defensive display particularly during the second half.
The Reds’ second string had taken a 20th minute lead when Ryan Moody headed home his first goal for the club via Adam Main’s near post corner.

Fleetwood responded immediately but Josh Walker spurned a gilt-edged opportunity to equalise when he blasted over the gaping net from close range.
A good spell of football saw Barry Irving and Dan Gullen play a neat one-two on the edge of the box culminating in a shot from the latter which forced Town ‘keeper, Kieran O’Boyle, into a fine save.
Town dominated most of the second half but they couldn’t breach Reds’ rearguard superbly marshalled by Sam Smith. When they did get beyond the back four, goalkeeper Chris Batty proved another stubborn barrier. He made a string of fine saves, dealt with numerous crosses and distributed the ball well.
Having shown great resilience keeping Fleetwood at bay, Reds started creating chances at the other end. Main squandered a couple of chances and Irving watched a header go narrowly wide.
