AFC Fylde Reserves  3 - 2  Workington Reserves

Thursday 4th February 2010

Reds’ three match winning run in the Lancashire League came to an abrupt halt when they made their first ever visit to Kellamergh Park, home of fourth placed AFC Fylde.

They could not handle a pacey home side who duly completed a league double over Steve Lee’s side with a win which was probably more comfortable than the score line suggests.

Goalkeeper Lee Jolly was at fault for AFC’s opener misjudging Danny Hutton’s cross from the right which drifted over him and into the net.  It was the worst possible start for the young ‘keeper but he atoned for that blunder to emerge as one of Reds’ best performers on the night pulling off half a dozen fine saves.

Reds had several opportunities to level the scores but a lack of composure in front of goal proved costly.

Levi Johnson shot hopelessly wide, Lee McCullough scuffed a shot in front of goal, Jordan Lee saw a well hit shot saved by Mark Gray and McCullough, again, was thwarted when his goal bound shot was cleared off the line.

To rub salt into the wounds, AFC doubled their lead against the run of play with home skipper Rob Edwards side-footing home a low cross from the left.

Jordan Lee

A minute before the break, Reds reduced the arrears with a brave headed goal from Jordan Lee.  He got the vital

touch despite being clattered by the goalkeeper and a central defender.

Fourth placed Fylde swamped Reds in the second half but a combination of, at times, desperate defending and brave goalkeeping from young Jolly kept them at bay temporarily.

It was just past the hour mark when the homeside got their third with Scott Harris on target from ten yards shooting home through a ruck of players.

Giving the ball away too easily, along with numerous defensive lapses, saw Reds under constant pressure for most of the second but they showed great character and actually finished on top for the final ten minutes.

Dion Barnes

Regaining the composure they displayed in the first half, Reds created several decent chances with Dion Barnes sweeping home from close range two minutes from time to cap a brave fightback.  It was too little, too late but the young Reds can take a few positives from a game they contributed to.

On the downside, their lack of discipline saw Dan Gullen, Levi Johnson, Simon Bragg and Adam Main pick up a yellow card apiece.

Reserves: Lee Jolly, Simon Bragg, Sam Smith, Dion Barnes, Dan McDermott, Lee McCullough, Levi Johnson (Liam Taylor), Adam Main, Dan Gullen, Jordan Lee and Jake Smith.
