Edmo is back

The longest serving manager in the club’s history, Darren Edmondson, has returned to the club to begin a second spell in the Borough Park hot seat.  He takes over the reins from interim managers Brian Dawson and Billy Redden and has appointed Richard Prokas as his assistant.

The two former Reds players were in charge of Northern League side, Penrith, until the end of last season.

Edmondson, 53, enjoyed a distinguished playing career with Carlisle United throughout the nineties and also played for Huddersfield Town, York City and Chester City before switching to non-league, adding to his Cumbrian connections by playing for both Barrow and Reds.

He was signed by Tommy Cassidy for Reds during the 2005-06 season and was a prominent player during his first two seasons at the club.  Six games into the 2007-08 season, he succeeded Cassidy as Workington manager, initially on a trial basis, but remained in charge for over six years.

During his time as manager, Reds were in Conference North (National North) and he moulded a solid mid-table outfit which finished 14th, 12th, 4th, 11th, 13th and 14th in the division and enjoyed Cumberland Cup success, achieved some excellent results in the FA Trophy, reached the play-offs and guided the club to the First Round of the FA Cup.  He left Reds mid-way through the ’13-14 campaign, becoming Barrow manager immediately after his Borough Park departure.

After a title winning season at Holker Street, he managed at Bradford Park Avenue and held various lead academy roles but, more recently, was in charge at Frenchfield.

Richard Prokas also makes a return to west Cumbria having had two spells here as a player, most notably the 2002-03 season when he made 42 appearances in the Reds midfield.

Richard also played over 200 games for Carlisle United and subsequently represented Cambridge United, Gretna, Workington and Penrith, also serving the latter, his hometown club, as manager for a period.

We welcome both back to Borough Park and will catch-up with them in due course for a more in-depth discussion on their plans going forward.
