Recap

Workington’s mini-winning streak came to an end as Hyde’s Tigers extended their unbeaten run against Reds to nine matches in what, I thought, was a good advertisement for NPL football.

I would have preferred to label the encounter as nondescript if it meant us coming back to Cumbria with some tangible reward, but the fact that we deserved something from a decent game and returned empty handed no doubt contributed to the downbeat mood afterwards.

Both sides created plenty of chances, both goalkeepers were kept busy and the game could have gone either way but Reds haven’t got a clean sheet in their makeup at the moment and, if you concede three goals, the chances of winning a game will be bordering on slim to unlikely.

They went behind three times, restored parity twice but Hyde’s winner in stoppage time left no time for a third equaliser.

The opening goal came after six minutes when Ewan Bange dragged his shot wide but Jack Redshaw recycled the ball then delivered a pass to Shakeel Jones-Griffiths who hammered the ball through a ruck of players and past Alex Mitchell.

And before Workington drew level eight minutes later, Redshaw sent another shot over the bar as did Tom Wilkinson, who just failed to convert a Kai Nugent free kick, and Dav Symington whose attempt cleared the target by inches.

Nugent had made a lively start and was involved in the equaliser. He latched on to David Norris’ intelligent ball and looked to be through on goal himself but it was Steven Rigg who bundled the ball home from close range to net for his fourth game in a row.

Back came Hyde and Norris cleared the ball off his own line after a long throw caused problems then Matthew Fearnley saw a well struck effort blocked.

By then, Reds had lost Jordan Little, who came off second best in a 50/50 challenge, so the first reshuffle saw Tom Stephenson revert to a defensive role having started brightly offensively.

And that’s when the game swung back in Hyde’s favour. Josh Galloway’s attempt was gathered at the second attempt by Callum Hiddleston but, when Reds lost possession at the other end, Fearnley’s angled drive flew past Mitchell to restore Hyde’s advantage.

It got worse with Symington forced to hobble off after another impact injury, leaving two key players applying ice-packs before the interval.

Mitchell gathered shots from distance to thwart Ben Kershaw and Fearnley before the break.

Workington resumed positively after the interval and Nugent, Jamie Allen and Rigg all had attempts saved by Hiddleston with the stop denying Allen falling into the spectacular category.

Mitchell dealt with another Fearnley effort before the spotlight fell, once more, on the lively Nugent. He saw one lob from distance land on the roof of the net with Hiddleston well off his line before Workington deservedly got back on terms. Nugent’s free-kick from the angle of the area found a way into the net with Hiddleston beaten at his near post.

In their next attacked, returning loanee, Sam Hetherington, broke through but his weak finish was gathered by the ‘keeper.

And when Mitchell produced a fine save to palm away a goal-bound Smith shot, a draw looked the most likely outcome.

But when Harry Ditchfield ventured forward and into the box, he went to ground following Efe Ambrose’s challenge and the referee, despite protests from several Reds players, pointed to the spot. Redshaw drove home the winner which seemed harsh from a Cumbrian perspective.

There was still time for another Allen shot to be turned away by Hiddleston as Hyde secured the points.
