Recap
Revenge tasted sweet for the young Reds when they bounced back from a disappointing league defeat against Rylands to knock them out of the League Cup.
Well beaten by them on home soil the week previous in league action, Reds kept their nerve in a penalty shoot-out to maintain their interest in the knock-out Cup.
They had gone ahead with an early Sam Christian goal but, in an even contest, both sides squandered chances to add to the opener.
Rylands eventually equalised on the stroke of half time with a cracking shot that went in off the crossbar.
Neither side could fashion a winner, even during a late flurry which saw chances falling to both Blues and Reds.
And so to the penalties. Reds had the opportunity to win the tie with their fifth spot-kick but the Rylands ‘keeper saved to put the celebrations on hold.
But Joe Rumney emerged as Reds’ hero when he saved Rylands’ last kick to secure a hard fought victory.
Lots of good performances on the day with Alfie Schofield emerging man-of-the-match.
