Review of the season (in numbers)

Let’s take a look back at the 2024-25 season with a bit of number-crunching.

38   It was our thirty-eighth season in the Northern Premier League.

12   Reds finished 12th in the Premier Division having started the final day in 18th position.

42   Our forty-two league games produced 15 wins, 7 draws and 20 defeats, amassing 52 points.

 57   With the addition of an FA Cup match (1), FA Trophy games (2), Cumberland Cup ties (3) and pre-season fixtures (9), the Reds first team played fifty-seven matches in total.

61   The sixty-one league goals were shared by: Steven Rigg (17), Dav Symington (9), Connor Pani (6), Kai Nugent (4), Jamie Allen (3), Ruben Grewal (3), Tom Stephenson (3), Efe Ambrose (2), Ceiran Casson (2), Alfie McDonough (2), Jake Allan, Matty Clarke, Josh Galloway, Kaedyn Kamara, Jordan Little, Ben McCarron, David Norris, Bruce Strachan, Steven Swinglehurst (1 each) plus 1 own-goal.  

5   Our FA Trophy goals were scored by: Steven Rigg (4) and Jamie Allen (1).

9   Reds’ goals in the Cumberland Cup were scored by: Ruben Grewal (2), Kaedyn Kamara (2), Ben McCarron (2), Tyler Beck, Owen Johnston and Sam Christian (1 each).

12   On target in the pre-season friendlies were: Josh Galloway (3), Steven Rigg (3), Greg McCaragher (2), Jamie Allen, Ben McCarron, Kai Nugent, Steven Swinglehurst (1 each).

43   David Norris became the oldest scorer for Reds when he netted our first goal in the 3-1 home win over Whitby Town, seven months past his 43rd birthday.

16   Alfie McDonough, at sixteen years and eight months, became the youngest player to score twice on his full debut in the home match against Ashton United.

100   Dav Symington scored his 100th competitive goal for the club in the home win over Whitby Town (64 of those were at home, 36 away).

50   Steven Rigg netted his 50th competitive goal for Reds in the 4-2 defeat at Worksop Town.

42   Forty-two different players were named on the team sheet throughout the season with Steven Rigg (38) and Alex Mitchell (37) making the most starts.

24   No fewer than two dozen players made their Reds debut during the 2024-25 campaign.

4   Four different goalkeepers were used during the season including: Alex Mitchell, Danny Eccles, Jonny Jamieson and Jack Barrett.

6   We only managed to keep six clean sheets all season, five in the League and one in the Cumberland Cup.

5   Five players captained the side during the course of the season: Dav Symington, Steven Rigg, Jordan Little, Kai Nugent and Alex Mitchell, the latter three on one occasion each.

21   We dropped twenty-one points after taking the lead, over eight matches.

69   Yellow cards picked up during the season with Steven Swinglehurst (12), Kai Nugent (7), Josh Galloway (5), Kaedyn Kamara (5), Steven Rigg (5), Carlie Barnes (4), Jake Allan (3), Theo Farquharson (3), Dav Symington (3), Tom Wilkinson (3), Jamie Allen (2), Efe Ambrose (2), Ceiran Casson (2), Matty Clarke (2), Jordan Little (2), Alex Mitchell (2), Bruce Strachan (2), Callum Bell (1), Brad Hubbold (1), Ruben Grewal (1), Sam Hetherington (1) and Connor Pani (1) the miscreants.

4   Four players were sent off over the season.  Kai Nugent and Steven Swinglehurst for ‘second yellow’ offences, Steven Rigg and Jordan Little received a ‘straight red’.

2   Reds included two full internationals in the squad with Efe Ambrose (Nigeria) and Jamie Allen (Montserrat) having played on the international stage, Jamie doing so as a Reds’ player.  Ruben Grewal was also called up by Kenya for a training camp whilst with the club.

20,654   People passed through the Borough Park turnstiles during the ’24-25 campaign – 16,372 watched the 21 league matches, 2,181 attended the four friendlies, 598 spectators watched the one FA Cup tie, 1,197 supported the two Trophy ties and the Cumberland Cup fixture drew a gate of 306.

780   The league average (home) crowd over twenty-one matches from an aggregate figure of 16,372

703   The league average crowd (away)over twenty-one matches from an aggregate figure of 14,761. 

2   Reds were knocked out of the Cumberland Cup on two occasions.  Initially, we lost to Whitehaven after a penalty shoot-out, following a 3-3 draw in the 2nd round.  We were then reinstated because Whitehaven had fielded an illegible player but were then beaten in the 3rd Round at Carlisle City!

11   Reds called upon the services of eleven loan players namely: Ben Williams, Ben Fell, Connor Pani (Gateshead), Kaedyn Kamara (Preston North End), Yestin Shakespear (Bolton Wanderers), Jake Allan, Aran Fitzpatrick, Sam Hetherington (Carlisle United), Amadou Doumbouya (Chorley), Theo Farquharson (Warrington Town) and Jack Barrett (Blackburn Rovers).

86   Our shortest journey of the season was to Lancaster City, a journey of 86 miles.

205   Our longest journey of the season was to Ilkeston, a journey of 205 miles.

3,085   The mileage for our 21 away games totalled 3,085 – there and back amounted to 6,170 miles travelled.

3   Reds completed three league doubles during the course of the season: Prescot Cables (2-0 at home and away), Whitby Town (3-1 home and away) and Mickleover (3-0 at home, 3-1 away).

3   Three teams inflicted a league double upon us: Stockton Town (1-3 at home, 0-5 away), Macclesfield (0-1 at home, 2-3 away) and Guiseley (0-2 both home and away).

7   Reds lost 1-0 on seven occasions, they won by that score once making it the most popular score line over the season.

8   Workington were awarded eight penalties during the course of the season, Steven Rigg converted 6 and had 1 saved, Dav Symington also converted 1.

3   Reds conceded three penalties, 1 was converted, another missed the target whilst Jack Barrett saved one v. FC United of Manchester at Borough Park.

7   The Reds team sheet at Stockton included no fewer than seven teenagers namely: Aran Fitzpatrick (18), Jake Allan (18), Sam Hetherington (18), Sam Christian (17), Tom Wilkinson (18), Owen Johnston (18) and Alfie McDonough (16). 

152   The total of substitutions made throughout the season with the most bizarre taking place in the home match v. Worksop Town.  Veteran David Norris (43) was replaced by rookie, Alfie McDonough (16), an age gap of nearly 27 years!  Reds were only able to name 4 substitutes on seven different occasions.

9   Nine of Reds’ opponents (Hyde United, Stockton Town, Mickleover, Ilkeston Town, Worksop Town, Basford United, Macclesfield, Leek Town and Morpeth Town) played on a 3G/4G pitch.  Workington’s only win on ‘plastic’ was at Mickleover, they lost at the other eight venues including their last five away games of the season at Worksop, Basford, Macclesfield, Leek and Morpeth!

5   The best unbeaten sequence at home (WDWWW) was, in fact, the last five games at Borough Park.
