VIP visit from ‘old boy’ John
John Scott, a goalkeeper who played for Reds in the North Eastern League seventy-five years ago, was the special guest at Borough Park on Saturday.
Having hardly played football at all until his late teens, John was given a trial by Reds after playing locally for Crosby.

He made his debut in March 1948, and in three seasons at the club, made seventy-five competitive appearances for Reds.
In 1950 he joined Leeds United, then of the Second Division, after being signed by Major Frank Buckley. He made over a century of appearances for Leeds during a five season stay at Elland Road.
John became great friends with John Charles after the pair shared digs together in the city.
Returning to his native Cumbria after his playing days, John settled in the Maryport area and switched his sporting allegiance to golf, eventually becoming President of the Cumbria Golf Union.
Accompanied by his daughter, Carol, John was making his first visit to Borough Park in over sixty years.
John wanted to meet the Reds squad and couldn’t believe how young some of the players are. As a member of the goalkeepers’ union, John was particularly keen to meet Alex Mitchell and Danny Eccles.

The 96 year old Cumbrian enjoyed his day at Borough Park and can now look forward to a similar experience at Leeds United on Wednesday.
