Half century for Riggy
Steven Rigg’s fifth season with the club is proving to be his best so far in terms of appearances and goals. And in a season of prolific scoring and inspirational performances, Riggy reached a personal milestone in the recent fixture at Worksop Town.
Apart from making his 100th start in a league game, he scored his 20th goal of what has been an outstanding personal campaign.

Although the second half strike at Worksop didn’t help register any points it was a landmark goal in his Workington career – his 50th competitive goal for Reds. The half century has included 41 in the NPL, 2 in the FA Cup, 5 in the FA Trophy and 2 in the Cumberland Cup. In addition, he has scored a further half dozen goals in friendlies.
It’s nearly seven years since Riggy netted his first goal for Reds and that was during a loan spell with the club during the 2017-18 season. It came on his debut and just happened to be the decider as we emerged surprise 3-2 winners at Altrincham.
Riggy scored three more goals that season but it would be another three years before he became a Workington player and treated us to his first Reds goal at Borough Park.
He had scored a Borough Park goal previously, 2016 in fact, when he netted against us in a pre-season friendly whilst playing for Queen of the South.
A return to West Cumbria in 2021 proved a good piece of business and he has been an invaluable member of the Reds squad for the past four seasons, captaining the side on numerous occasions.
His fifty goals for Reds have been scored against thirty different clubs with a near equal split – 24 at Borough Park and 26 on the road.
For the record, he has scored against: Altrincham, Atherton Collieries, Bamber Bridge (3), Basford United (2), Bradford Park Avenue, Carlisle City, Carlisle United, Colne, Darlington, FC United of Manchester (2), Gainsborough Trinity, Glossop North End (2), Guiseley (2), Hyde United (2), Ilkeston Town (3), Kendal Town (2), Kidsgrove Athletic (2), Lancaster City (2), Marine, Mickleover (2), Morpeth Town (3), 1874 Northwich, Prescot Cables (2), Ramsbottom United, Stalybridge Celtic, Stourbridge (2), Warrington Rylands, West Allotment Celtic, Whitby Town (2) and Worksop Town (3).
Riggy's season totals
Season | League goals | Cup goals | Total |
---|---|---|---|
2017-18 | 4 | 0 | 4 |
2021-22 | 6 | 0 | 6 |
2022-23 | 5 | 3 | 8 |
2023-24 | 10 | 2 | 12 |
2024-25 | 16 | 4 | 20 |
Total | 41 | 9 | 50 |
Although he has scored twice in a game no fewer than seven times, he has yet to net a hat-trick in Workington colours – perhaps that achievement is still to come!
