It’s a wrap
Wall-to-wall sunshine and non-stop football ‘on loop’ – the perfect way to bring down the curtain on another season at Borough Park.
The West Cumbria Youth League finals weekend saw thirty-four teams and over 500 children compete in seventeen finals over three days with parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, brothers and sisters turning out in force to support their football-mad kids.
The event has been fortunate with the weather in recent years and Borough Park was, once again, bathed in beautiful warm sunshine and the football served up some great entertainment.
A dedicated team of match officials, both young and slightly older, controlled the fixtures, played in a friendly spirit throughout.
The majority of the games were won by a single goal and nerve-wracking conclusions were the order of the day. There were also two penalty shoot-outs as finals went to the wire.
Cleator Moor Celtic usually do well in all tournaments and they concluded a superb three days of football with a convincing 3-1 victory over Workington Juniors in the U18s final.
Two of our own, director, Richard Lewthwaite, and Development Squad manager, Craig Johnston, have been part of the WCYL for many years but the latter is vacating his role and left with a long service award, presented to him, on behalf of the League, by Richard.
WCYL expressed their gratitude to all at Workington AFC for their help staging the annual event.
